Probe child beggars racket

MARGAO: Savera, an NGO working in the field of women and child welfare, has written to the director general of police (DGP) urging him to probe the suspected begging racket involving minor children in the state.
We have a strong suspicion that these children (found begging on the streets) have been sold to gangs who run a systematic begging racket in the state. These gangs work on the common psychology of a person who would not mind giving a little money to a child who is hungry and pleading for food," Tara Kerkar of Savera stated in the letter.
Kerkar told reporters that law-enforcing agencies should prevent beggars from taking shelter at railway stations and bus stands, in a bid to prevent cases of child kidnapping.
